Oktober 1998 entdeckte ein Teenager bei einer Radtour durch Wyoming den reglosen K\u00f6rper eines jungen Mannes, offensichtlich blutig geschlagen und gefoltert. Matthew Shepard war nicht mehr bei Bewusstsein, aber er lebte offensichtlich noch, musste auf jeden Fall noch gelebt haben, als er an den Zaun gefesselt wurde. Rund 25&#8217;000 waren es am Ende und vielen davon war Bargeld beigef\u00fcgt, mal zehn, mal 20, manchmal sogar 100 Dollar. Am Ende hatten die Shepards rund 140&#8217;000 Dollar beisammen, von denen sie zun\u00e4chst nicht wussten, was sie damit machen sollten.<\/p>\n<p>Nun wurde in Washington seine Mutter Judy Shepard gew\u00fcrdigt: Am Freitag verlieh ihr US-Pr\u00e4sident Joe Biden im Weissen Haus die Presidential Medal of Freedom. Deren Idee: Hass in Liebe und Verst\u00e4ndnis verwandeln. Die Stiftung f\u00fchrt Hassverbrechen-Schulungen f\u00fcr Polizeikr\u00e4fte oder Staatsanw\u00e4lt*innen durch und setzt sich f\u00fcr Gesetze gegen Diskriminierung ein.<\/p>\n<p>Seit 2019 gibt es in der Washington National Cathedral eine Gedenktafel f\u00fcr Matthew Shepard.
